What is the best laser for excessive facial hair growth?

What is the best laser for excessive facial hair growth? #askdrnatalia 🤔

So this is a little tricky. If you have lots of dark, thick hair and you are fairly pale, probably the best hair removal for you is going to be an Alexandrite laser (755 nm).

If you have lots of dark, thick hair and you have darker or more olive skin, then a ND:Yag (1064 nm) laser is the best one for you.

But lasers aren’t my preferred method of hair removal because it’s not permanent.

The gold standard for hair removal is electrolysis – I know what you are thinking – ‘That’s so old fashioned! Do people still do that?’ – well, call me old fashioned but electrolysis is still the only permanent method of hair removal
Yes it can be painful (but so is laser hair removal) and it is fairly time consuming. But it is also way way less expensive than laser hair removal. 💵

And like I said, when you zap the hair at the right part of the hair cycle, it is a permanent destruction of the hair.

Also, with laser there is a small but real risk of something called ‘paradoxical hypertrichosis’ – which is an increase in hair growth from the laser! 😱

This is rare but I have seen it happen and we think it is due to the laser actually stimulating the hair follicles.

If you can find a good, convenient electrolysis technician go for that – you will be happy you did in the long run. I usually suggest starting with weekly treatments and then spacing them out depending on your regrowth.

But remember, just like laser, you can’t pluck or wax or thread between treatments.
